Cultivating Our Skills Supporting Black Perinatal Health

Objectives: Keira Grant

Many Black people do not feel safe navigating the perinatal health care system. It is a leading reason why Black birthers seek the support of a birth doula. What causes Black people to fear the healthcare system and how can having a culturally aware doula alleviate fear and enhance confidence for Black birthers?

Description/workshop overview

This Doula School Watch Party will screen and discuss “Standard of Care” an episode of For the Culture, a documentary series by Black Canadian filmmaker and mother Amanda Parris. Drawing from her own experience of birthing while black, Parris interviews Black birthers and birthworkers to explore the question “What is the standard of care necessary for Black birthing people to feel safe in childbirth?”

Following the screening, we will discuss the elements of the necessary standard of care identified in the documentary and through our own experiences, and how we can enact this standard of care in our birth work practice.
