HANDS-ON SKILLS

Hands-on doula skills are such an important part of the work we do. Sometimes as a new doula it may be what we feel most apprehensive about. If you’ve done your coursework all online you may feel like you’re “missing out” on something important. The truth is you’ve been helping people around you your whole life and it will all feel so ‘intuitive’ and ‘normal’ when you are at a birth or postpartum shift. But we want to give you additional skills you can use in your prenatal visits and at births and pp shifts to help you feel even MORE confident. That’s why we call it a live virtual BOOSTER because it’s meant to “boost” your existing skills.

Birth Doula Booster

Over the 3 hour booster we will cover:

  • Breathing techniques
  • Comfort measures
  • Double hip squeeze
  • Pushing techniques and positions
  • Relaxation activities
  • Mindfulness practices
  • Prenatal visit activities to introduct these concepts to clients BEFORE labour
  • Scenario reviews (time permitting)

We ask that you bring a partner to your hands-on skills session. This is important as you really need someone to practice on. This can be any person, any gender, any age (as long as they are old enough to give you feedback).

Postpartum Doula Booster

Over the 3 hour booster we will cover:

  • Infant bathing
  • Infant soothing
  • Lactation position support
  • Babywearing at a client’s house (wrap review)
  • Postpartum scenarios and how to best support a client

Things To Have On Hand

Please feel free to bring as many of these things as you have available at home. Don’t stress too much if you’re missing a few things. You do NOT need to go out and buy them (though you may want them for your prenatal visits anyhow)

For Birth Booster

  • Ice cubes (made but leave in freezer until we tell you to grab them)
  • Rolling pin/empty wine bottle, full soda can (anything that can be used for rolling type of massage)
  • Hand cream or massage oil
  • Blanket/towel
  • Extra pillows
  • Exercise ball (if you have one)
  • Comb
  • Candies/mints
  • Items from your house that make your environment feel warm and cozy (candles, music, etc)

For Postpartum Booster

  • Doll to practice on
  • Infant swaddle (can be a large muslin cloth type or an actual velcro swaddler)
  • Facecloths
  • Anything else you’d like explained!

This course is FREE to any Doula Canada students who have purchased a self-directed course. Please get the coupon code from our home office. For anyone else who’d like to join us please purchase the course. live virtual booster[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

WEBINAR: Transforming Gender Dysphoria into Gender Euphoria

Transforming Gender Dysphoria into Gender Euphoria

Alleviating perinatal gender dysphoria for trans clients

Objectives

Adjusting to our rapidly changing bodies is a layered aspect of pregnancy for all people who go through this rite of passage. For trans birthers, there are extra layers. Alongside the joy and anticipation that the changing body represents, anxiety and distress may also arise as a result of physical and emotional experiences that are incongruous with gender identity and presentation. How can doulas supporting trans clients develop a better understanding of what causes distress and help them find ways to experience more joy from trying to conceive (TTC) to postpartum?

Description/workshop overview

In this 60-minute virtual Q&A, our member Jess Surtees will generously share their lived and professional experience as a non-binary doula and birther to help us cultivate a deeper understanding of what gender dysphoria is, why the perinatal period contains a minefield of potential triggers, and how we can reduce these triggers and enhance our client’s joy.

Jess is a labour, birth, loss, and termination doula completing studies with Doula Training Canada (DTC) with backgrounds in sexual education, political theory, and the culinary arts.  Jess has a thirst for knowledge and a passion for puns, nature, their three cats, and their (now very active) one-year-old child.

Guided by Jess’s expertise, participants will leave with a better understanding of:

What gender dysphoria is and how to reduce triggers associated with:

  • Trying to conceive
  • Internal exams
  • The changing body
  • Birth
  • Feeding and newborn care

This Q&A is for doulas and birth workers who want to provide gender-affirming and empowering support to trans birthers, ensuring their ability to build their client base within this underserved group.
