4 Yoga & Doula Tools to Help Clients Manage Anxiety During Labour

Let’s be honest, anxiety in labour is something almost every doula encounters, and it can stop a birth in its tracks. When fear takes over, breath gets shallow, contractions can stall, and our clients disconnect from the very bodies that are doing the most important work of their lives. The good news? You probably already have everything you need to help.

Here’s how four simple tools came together for one client and how they can work for yours.

Priya arrived at the hospital already spiraling. Thirty-six weeks of anticipation had collapsed into shaking hands and shallow breath. Her doula Camille didn’t launch into a pep talk. She just quietly got to work.

She started with breath. Extended exhale breathing, inhale for four, exhale for eight. Simple, right? But it can be so effective! That long exhale activates the parasympathetic nervous system and basically tells the body, hey, we’re safe here. If you only ever use one tool from your doula anxiety toolkit, make it this one.

Next came grounding touch. Camille placed a warm hand on Priya’s sacrum and asked her to feel the weight of it. That’s it. Just that. Paired with some gentle hip circles on the birth ball, Priya started coming back into her body almost immediately. It’s such a small thing, and it’s so powerful.

Then Camille offered an affirmation: “My body knows how to do this.” She invited Priya to repeat it silently with each exhale. When anxious thoughts are running the show, mantra gives the mind something intentional to hold onto instead. We love this one because clients can keep using it long after we’ve stepped out of the room.

Finally, between contractions, Camille guided Priya into a restorative posture, a soft child’s pose draped over the birth ball, forehead down, arms loose. It’s the physical embodiment of letting go, which is exactly what labour is asking for anyway.

Within an hour, Priya was breathing through contractions with her eyes closed and a quiet calm on her face. Camille hadn’t done anything complicated. She’d just shown up with the right tools at the right moment.

And that’s really what we do, isn’t it?
